Benefits and Debt

Here at S2 Food Poverty Network we know that there are many causes of food poverty, and we want to support people in their journey towards a more secure future.

When people join the Community Shop, we ensure access to fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products, along with store cupboard staples and personal hygiene items. But we aim to do more because the causes of food poverty can be deep rooted. Without additional services who use the Community Food Shop don’t always have the chance to move forward in their lives, towards a better future.

Help with Debt

Debt is often a root cause of food poverty. It can affect day to day spending as well as having an impact on making the smallest of decisions. Members of the Community Food Shop have access to debt solutions from a Community Money Advice (CMA) mentor, a service regulated by the FCA. Our mentors are trained to offer this free, confidential service, which can help manage debt.

Benefit Advice

Our benefit worker is a trained specialist, who can guide and support members of the Community Food Shop to ensure that their benefits are maximised. Without this essential service many people are missing out on much needed resources to which they are fully entitled. Benefit claims and council tax, Household Support Fund, energy vouchers and travel passes, all made a difference to the day to day lives of people and their families.

If you feel you can offer support as a volunteer, explore the roles available, and get in touch. Let’s try to improve lives together!
